DOCUMENTARY GROUP
Our next meeting will be held from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. February 12th at Judy Branfman's home in Santa Monica. Judy has requested that we arrive no earlier than 11, so if you arrive a few minutes early, you may wait in your car or on the street. It will be our usual potluck, so please bring a beverage or a dish to share. Directions to Judy's home and RSVP information are provided at the end of this announcement.

The presentation will begin around 11:30. Our presenter, Sheila Laffey, is the producer of the award winning documentary "The Last Stand" . Sheila will be screening her latest film "The Last Stand: Heroes at Ballona Wetlands" as well as discussing various aspects of working with PBS and the value of repurposing films. The following is a brief description of her background:

Sheila Laffey PhD, President of Echo Mountain Productions Inc., has produced, directed, and written award winning documentaries and children's programs about the environment. Her latest film, the award winning short doc, "The Last Stand - Heroes at Ballona Wetlands" is currently airing in the new Public Television series, NATURAL HEROES. It previewed at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles on Earth Day 2004 as part of the Artivist Film Festival.

Her other works include "Walden", "We All Need the Forest","In the Middle of the Sea", and "Hawai'i in Transition: Vision for a Sustainable Future."

In addition to directing, producing, and writing, Sheila has taught cinema, film, and video related courses at Ithaca College, Hofstra University, City University of New York, and the University of Hawaii. She Currently teaches cinema at Santa Monica College. #top

10th is one short dead-end block that runs off Ashland between Lincoln and 11th - 3 blocks south of Ocean Park. You can either come down Lincoln (from the 1`0 freeway) and go east at the light at Ashland - or come down 11th and go west at Ashland. Please park on Ashland or 11th since 10th is tiny and has almost no parking. 2909 is the 1st bldg on the left (yellow) - go in the picket gate and up the stairs and I'm the 3rd and last door on the right.

While under contract with numerous distributors including Trident, G.E.L. , J.L Media, Initial Entertainment, and Gun for Hire, Page B. Ostrow gained experience for over fifteen years negotiating the license rights and raising global financing for over seventy feature films. As a consultant, educator, and producer's representative, Ostrow guides filmmakers successfully through the development, packaging, financing, and distribution process on an
hourly/retainer basis.

Originally Canadian, Ostrow began her career as an assistant director on many films for Orion, Alliance, Viacom, Simcom and H.B.O. In 1990, she joined forces with the right hand to Canada's largest
distribution/production company Alliance Entertainment. After forming a local company in the Orion Pictures building, called Cinema World, Ostrow eventually became an independent consultant or hired gun for over 25 international film distributors. At
film markets and festivals, she earned a reputation as an excellent negotiator with film buyers and distributors via a combination of language skills, (French, German, Spanish, Yiddish), with loyal
contacts internationally, and overall business savvy. #top

SPEAKER: Linda J. Cowgill
Linda will be discussing Structure and Content for Screenwriters in Writing the Short Film . The essential requirements necessary to make your writing crisp, sharp and compelling. Emphasizing characters, structure dialogue and story , Linda dispels the "magic formula" concept that screenplays can be constructed by anyone with the right software program. She will compare the process with Feature Film Writing and we will view a few sample short films.

Linda J. Cowgill received her Masters in Screenwriting from UCLA, after winning several screenwriting awards and Fellowships. She has taught screenwriting seminars at the Boston Film Institute, The American Film Institute and the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Linda has written over a dozen features and screenplays.

Between Sunset and Fountain, 1 block east of Crescent Heights, around the corner from The Virgin Megastore, and south of The Laugh Factory.
